Peter Trego is embarking on a bid to qualify for the final major golf championship of the season, ahead of The Open at Royal St George's next month.
The Nottinghamshire all-rounder, who has scored nearly 20,000 First-Class runs and taken nearly 650 wickets in a professional career spanning over 20 years, is aiming to grab one of the 12 places available for the 149th edition of the championship.
Qualifying begins at Hollinwell in Nottinghamshire on Sunday 27 June, and if Trego is successful he will progress to a final qualifying competition taking place over 36 holes at the same course on Tuesday 29 June.
Trego will be raising money for the Professional Cricketers’ Trust, and has agreed to donate £50 for each par, £250 for each birdie and £500 for each eagle to the Trust, through his partnership with financial services company Trade Nation.
“The Professional Cricketers’ Trust is a charity close to my heart as they do a wonderful job supporting current and ex-cricketers when they fall on hard times and poor health - and not only the players, but their families too," he said.
“I will no doubt be nervous, but I will be playing with that added desire that my sponsor Trade Nation has offered to me as an incentive.
"If, at the end of the day on Sunday, I can be through to the next stage of qualifying and also handing over a sizable cheque to the Trust, then I’ll be one happy cricketing golfer!”
