Nottinghamshire seamer Jake Ball has been called into the England squad for the forthcoming Royal London One-Day International series against Australia.

The 27-year-old has been drafted in as cover for all-rounder Chris Woakes, who will miss the first part of the series with a right quad strain.

The Warwickshire man joins Ben Stokes (left hamstring tear) on the injured list. Both players have commenced their injury rehab programmes and will be hoping to respond to treatment with the aim of featuring in the latter stages of the series.

Mansfield-born Ball last played for England at the start of the year in Perth and was an integral member of the squad that defeated Australia 4-1 in that one-day series Down Under.

His last Test came in the Ashes in November, when he featured in the first match of the series at Brisbane.

In all, the former Welbeck CC player has made 17 one-day international and four Test appearances to date.

His recall follows an excellent start to the 2018 season where he has taken more wickets in Specsavers County Championship Division One, with 27, than any other bowler.

The right-armer is also the leading wicket taker for the Notts Outlaws in this year’s Royal London One-Day Cup, with 10 victims.

Ball joins fellow Nottinghamshire player, batsman Alex Hales, in the 16-man squad that will be captained by Middlesex’s Eoin Morgan.
