Nottinghamshire won one and lost one of their two Twenty20 games at Paragon military base on Sunday.
A youthful side took on the Cardiff MCCU team first and were beaten by six wickets as Connor Brown hit an unbeaten 70 off 56 balls for the students.
Notts added the likes of Chris Read and Samit Patel to the side for the subsequent match against a Barbados Select XI and they chased down 139 to win off the last ball when Billy Root hit a four, to earn victory by four wickets.
It was a good day for Root, who scored 21 off 17 balls against Barbados Select, having already struck 45 in the Cardiff game. Jake Libby hit 52 against Cardiff, his former team.
Reflecting on the day, head coach Peter Moores said: “Losing the first game was disappointing but we learned quite a bit.
“It was a tough pitch, especially early in the morning. Cardiff played well and we could have played better.
“It’s what pre-season is for. It was great to see Billy Root and Jake Libby bat so well together. Jake has had a good trip.
“In some ways the Barbados XI looked a better team so I was pleased to get over the line. We bowled better and varied our pace more.
“Chris Read and Michael Lumb did well batting in that game. Overall it’s good practice and it lets us see how players cope with a bit of pressure on in game situations.”
Read opened the batting in the second game and retired hurt on 40 off 36 balls. The wicket-keeper felt a slight strain in his calf so left the game as a pre-caution.
